Although very few themes throughout the film are composed by Badalamenti in comparison to some of Lynch’s other productions, similarly to Lost Highway, the compositions on there really go the distance. As Sailor ( Nicolas Cage) and Lula ( Laura Dern) cruise through the desert at sunset, the theme frames the moment perfectly, creating an unforgettable, multi sensory experience. “Dark Spanish Symphony” is one of the most beautiful pieces of music for screen ever written. For example, hearing “Dub Driving” and “Fats Revisited” blare while pounding down the titular Lost Highway captures a moment so superbly that it could only be a product of Badalamenti and Lynch’s gorgeous work. When Badalamenti’s work is present, though, it’s incredibly effective. There are fewer Badalamenti compositions on the soundtrack of this movie, with an emphasis being placed on other musicians’ contributions to the soundtrack also, including the soundtrack’s co-creator, Barry Adamson, Rammstein, and producer Trent Reznor. The riff sounds completely unhinged, erratically continuing beyond the end of the rest of the track, capturing the way his character arc too goes completely off-the-rails throughout the course of the film’s events. The sax run becomes a leitmotif for his character throughout the soundtrack, embedded into core moments throughout the movie. Near the beginning of the film, we see his character at a gig, playing a wailing riff as a part of the track “Red Bats with Teeth”. One of the core characters in Lost Highway, Fred Madisen ( Bill Pullman), is a saxophonist.
